Estudantes com deficiência na universidade : questões em torno da sua adaptação e sucesso académico

Abstract

Descrevem-se algumas dificuldades particulares na transição e adaptação académica dos alunos com deficiência ao ensino superior, e a necessidade de um maior envolvimento por parte das instituições com as necessidades específicas destes alunos ao nível do seu sucesso escolar e do seu desenvolvimento psicossocial. A escassez de estudos na área em Portugal, justificou a consulta da literatura internacional neste domínio tendo em vista o enquadramento de um projecto de investigação. As dificuldades percebidas e vivenciadas por estes alunos decorrem da interacção das limitações decorrentes da sua área de deficiência com as barreiras físicas existentes no “campus” e com a forma como colegas, docentes e funcionários lidam com esta problemática e com estes alunos em particular. A investigação disponível aponta para dificuldades acrescidas quando as instituições não dispõem de serviços apropriados de apoio, ou quando a sua forma de actuação é deficiente. Taxas elevadas de abandono e de insucesso escolar podem ocorrer, em consequência, junto deste subgrupo de alunos. Aponta, ainda, para a importância de variáveis moderadoras pessoais, como os níveis de autonomia e auto-estima, destes alunos. Todos estes aspectos acabaram por ser integrados num projecto de investigação com estes alunos, cujos objectivos e principais produtos esperados são aqui descritos.

Difficulties concerning transition and adaptation to Higher Education and the need of a greater involvement from the institutions with students with disabilities’ specifics necessities regarding their academic success and their psychosocial development are described. The lack of Portuguese studies in this domain, accounted for a search of international literature, in order to frame a research project. Perceived and lived difficulties of these students occur from the interaction of the limitations linked to their specific disability area and physical barriers in the campus, and from colleagues, teachers and staff behaviours regarding the disability and the students them selves. Actual research suggests increased difficulties when the institutions do not have appropriate support services, or when their intervention is short. In consequence, elevated rate of abandon and academic failure can occur, in this subgroup of students. Still suggests for the relevance of these students’ personal moderators variables, as well as autonomy and self-esteem levels. All these aspects were integrated in a research project with students with disability, whose objectives and main expected products are described in this paper.
