No
apresentadas no manual.
The relevance of the laboratory tasks integration in the teaching of Sciences in its broadest sense and of Physics in particular is held by the experts in Science education and is expressly recognized in the up-to-date curriculum revision of the secondary teaching in Portugal. However, although there seems to be a consensus as for the fact that the laboratory work may take on the role of an overriding issue in Science teaching, the investigation seems to convey the idea that no tie-up should always be drawn between that commonly held opinion and a more efficacious learning, particularly of the scientific knowledge. This research work aimed mainly at assessing to what extent the conceptualisation and characterization of LTs (Laboratory tasks) held by the politicians who are known to be responsible for the up-to-date curriculum revision of the secondary teaching and for the elaboration of the new syllabus of Physics and Chemistry A (Form 1) get similar to what is held by the researchers in Science teaching. The above- mentioned work also had as target to analyse to what extent the LTs presented in Physics school textbooks get achieved according to the education policies as well as to Science education experts. Furthermore, it intended to check how far the LTs carried out by Physics teachers accomplish what gets recommended by the political decisions as well as what is held by the investigators in Science teaching. The Physics LTs of compulsory achievement (insertion of the LTs in the teaching unit and the openness degree of the LT) which were proposed in the school books that exist in the national market (8 until 2006/2007 and 9 from 2007/2008) and in the syllabus of FQ A as well, were characterized. It also inquired how far the features of the Physics’s LTs that were presented in the several textbooks were thrown up according to the guidelines which had been sent by the Education Ministry (EM) and the ones that arose from the didactic investigation. The teachers’ conceptions/stands on the various designations attributed to the practical work on the importance of the LTs in Science teaching as well as on the importance of the textbook in putting in practice the LTs. Teachers’ practices in relation to carrying out the LTs were characterized too. In the study that was fulfilled together with the teachers, two distinct samples were borne in mind: 10 and 214 teachers. The former sample (a more cut down one) took part in the first stage of iithe phase. The carried out LTs concerning to the Unit 1 of Physics were analysed (the LTs were taped in video whereas the other classes of the same unit were taped only in audio) and the teachers’ conceptions/held viewpoints on the already referred to subjects were known through the achievement of interviews. The gathered data which were added to the ones that were taken out from other studies holding similar features made it possible to build up a questionnaire applied to the more broadened sample of teachers with experience in the teaching of the new syllabus of F.Q.- Form 1. The results have shown that the syllabus puts forward proposals of LTs with a greater openness degree than the whole of curriculum books in most parameters that are analysed. On the other hand, the group of books that get nearer to the recommendations of the syllabus as well as of the science education experts is the group of the 3 most adopted textbooks in the schools since 2007/2008 and the one that gets less near is the group of the whole of the 9 ones which have also been adopted since 2007/2008. The results also show teachers seem to bear in mind the recommendations of the three most adopted textbooks as far as the following parameters are concerned: responsibility in the achievement of procedure, collection of data and results analysis, reflection on the procedure and communication of the results. Nevertheless, as far as the contextualization of the Lt in the teaching unit and the parameter conclusions are concerned, teachers don’t follow the suggestions that are put forward in the textbooks. On the other hand, the carried out LTs didn’t tally, in the whole of the aspects in study, with the guidelines that were defined not only by the Science education experts but also by the syllabus. On the contrary, they have shown insufficiencies, such as: the reduced implementation of LTs that demand a high degree of pupil’s involvement; inaccurate conceptions on the several designations of practical tasks, the weak “ambition” as far as the importance of the LTs in Science teaching/learning is concerned as well as the poor critical analysis of the proposals that are presented in the curriculum books. These facts make it possible to draw the conclusion that the approaches which are verified between the syllabus and the curriculum books and the one held by the science education experts, in what concerns the features of the LTs of Physics of the syllabus of Physics and Chemistry A (Form 1), weren’t enough so that a satisfactory change of teachers’ standpoints and practices was achieved. Therefore an intervention at level of teachers’ continuous formation will be essential. It should take the experience and conceptions of each one as departure point in order to accomplish iiithe following targets: a clarification of concepts, the capacity of critical analysis of the LTs that are proposed in the curriculum books and respective adaptations, the utilisation of the LTs in conditions that should be consistent with the intended aims and according to the available resources and the pupils’ capacities/difficulties. |
