The aim of the presente work was to study the possibility of obtaining alternative textile fibers using residues from renewable sources as biomass sources. The textile industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world and, consequently, its future depends on minimizing the impact of its products. It is in this sense that natural fibers can play an important role, especially fibers derived from waste. The production of textile fibers from these residues has advantages such as sustainability, recyclability, and low raw material cost. The substrates studied were Cordyline australis leaves, corn leaves (Zea mays) and banana leaves (Musa sp.). In the production of the fibers from these raw materials, biotechnological processes and green chemistry techniques were used, in order to reduce the environmental footprint of the final product. The substrates used in this investigation were submitted to an hydrothermal pre-treatment, with different durations, to enhance the microbial degradation of non-cellulosic components. After being extracted, the fibers were submitted to an enzymatic treatment with pectinase and cellulase, individually, and in cocktail. The fibers obtained were characterized physically, chemically and mechanically, in terms of weight, linear density, tenacity and elongation, color coordinates and chemical composition. As the study target was natural fibers, the results showed a high variability in the results, associated with the type of fibers in question. The 7-day pre-treatment proved to be insufficient for all the substrates. In general, it was found that a longer pre-treatment time enhanced a greater removal of non cellulosic compounds and a consequent improvement in fiber tenacity. Through the FTIR analysis of all samples and types of substrate analyzed, it was also concluded that the treatments applied do not cause qualitative changes in the chemical composition of the fibers. However, although it was not possible to quantify the amount of each compound in the samples, it appears that there were decreases in their concentrations. |
