Lima de Freitas was born in Setúbal on June 22, 1927 and unexpectedly left the Lusitanian landscape at 5 October of 1998 in Lisbon. He is an author of the twentieth century that deserves special recognition by its comprehensive and interdisciplinary work and also for his contributions to society, culture and the art world. This research work aims to study the "Public Work" a set of 32 pieces of art located in Portugal, which contain images with a strong mythicsymbolic contribution. Thus, in the light of symbolic hermeneutics, a mythcriticism is presented to every painting, in which there is a concern to find the archetype or symbol present in the Public Work painting studied. Also the author's writings are used to reflect his line of thought. In this sense, in Part I, there is concern to study and present the plastic work of Lima de Freitas, covering his painting, illustration and Public Work First the artistic path is presented, adjusted to his aesthetic thought. Next his Public Work is presented, making a contextualization about the public art, defining like this the places and their audiences. After this recognition phase on the art and thought of the author, continues to the Part II devoted to the study and knowledge of written work, relatively to myths and symbols, very focused in the study of mazes, as well as the hermetic language which is more dedicated to the study of numbers and sacred geometry. In Part III it‘s presented the theoretical framework that underpins the adopted symbolic hermeneutics. This hermeneutic model is based on the Gilbert Durand Imaginary Anthropology, namely in his work entitled The Anthropological Structures of the Imaginary, other author's studies on some converging subjects have not been forgotten. A mithcriticism interpretation of each Public Work work of art is made in the light of a symbolic hermeneutics. Finally, in Part IV the conclusions of this study are presented, recognizing the importance of the obsessive images of Public Work for the construction and enhancing of the Lusitanian Imaginary. It is this enhancement that allows us to speak of a Remythologizing and a Transdisciplinarity, which open innovative perspectives for the educational aesthetics of Public Work. The mythic-symbolic relevance of Public Work is the main objective of this investigation, recognizing its ability to convey an aesthetic message that manifests itself in an educational manner. |
