Memórias de um tempo difícil: Filhos de Montepó, de António Mota

Abstract

O penúltimo romance juvenil de António Mota, Filhos de Montepó (2003), regressando ao cenário rural de livros anteriores e mantendo-se no registo discursivo a que essas mesmas obras nos habituaram, trabalha sobre tópicos como o crescimento e a autonomia do jovem adolescente, a busca de modelos de identificação positivos e a rejeição do modelo paterno, a que se contrapõe uma maior aproximação afetiva à figura materna e a tentativa de escapar ao isolamento de um meio rural atrasado. Aprofunda, por outro lado, o retrato crítico do país político, social e cultural de inícios da década de sessenta do século XX, focalizado numa região isolada e pobre do norte de Portugal.

Filhos de Montepó (2003), António Mota’s penultimate novel for young readers, returns to the rural setting of his previous books and retains the type of discourse to which these works have accustomed us. Topics of special interest include the process of growing up and becoming independent during adolescence, the search for positive role models and the rejection of the fatherly model, which is counteracted by a tighter affective bond with the motherly figure and by the attempt to escape the isolation of a backward rural milieu. On the other hand, the book also engages in a deeper critical representation of political, social and cultural issues at the beginning of the 1960s, by focusing on an isolated and poor region from the north of Portugal
