The benefits of physical activity in the health and quality of life promotion are already recognized. However, studies have shown the prevalence of sedentary behavior in children, revealing a disturbing reality in terms of global public health. The active transportation (walking / cycling) on the path between home and school can enhance the daily level of physical activity recommended by the Word Health Organization (WHO) - 60 min and promote active and healthy behaviors in the children’s routines. The aims of this research was to describe children’s forms of displacement during the school commute in rural / urban contexts and identify the main limitations to active transportation. Participated in this study 268 students of the 5th / 6th grade, from two schools in Braga, one urban (148 students) and one rural (120 students). The results showed that 84.3% do not use the active transportations, being the car the most used displacement form (48.3%) and in last the walking (15.7%). Children studying in urban areas move more actively (22.2%) compared to the rural areas (7.7%), showing a significant association. The main limitations were the distance, insecurity in traffic / violence and lack of adequate infrastructure. Present a summary of the article to a maximum of 200 words. The summary should be presented in a single paragraph and should state the aims, methods, main results and conclusions. The abstract should be presented as concisely and explicitly as possible. |
