Sistemas de abastecimento e drenagem de água a Bracara Augusta: aquedutos, canalizações e cloacas

Abstract

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo o estudo das infraestruturas de abastecimento e drenagem de água da cidade romana de Bracara Augusta, tendo por base os vestígios identificados nas escavações arqueológicas realizadas em Braga nos últimos 35 anos, no âmbito do “Projeto de Bracara Augusta”. O referido estudo foi realizado no quadro de um Estágio efetuado na Unidade de Arqueologia da Universidade do Minho (UAUM). O vasto acervo de dados que tivemos oportunidade de compulsar diretamente, a partir dos cadernos de campo, dos relatórios de escavações, ou da base de dados da UAUM, permitiunos analisar, descrever e interpretar um conjunto significativo de estruturas articuladas com o sistema hidráulico da cidade romana, que inclui estruturas de abastecimento, distribuição e evacuação, que garantiam o funcionamento dos edifícios, a drenagem de águas pluviais e residuais e a salubridade do espaço urbano. Analisaram-se várias estruturas, que foram avaliadas de acordo com um conjunto de critérios previamente definidos, constantes de fichas descritivas, que incluíam a funcionalidade e cronologia, o tipo, a orientação, a pendente, o contexto e a localização dos vestígios, tanto dentro da malha urbana proposta para a cidade romana, como dentro das zonas arqueológicas onde foram encontrados. Os dados obtidos permitiram, também, uma avaliação qualitativa e quantitativa dos diferentes materiais usados na construção deste tipo de infraestruturas, designadamente, o material cerâmico, a pedra e o chumbo. Foi igualmente possível definir grandes categorias morfológicas, que se repartem entre estruturas em caixa, em forma de U, em canal e em tubo de cerâmica ou de chumbo. Com o presente trabalho consideramos que foram atingidos os objetivos que nos propusemos no âmbito do Estágio realizado na UAUM, entre os quais se contava a elaboração de um catálogo das estruturas de abastecimento e drenagem de água de Bracara Augusta, identificadas até à data. Por outro lado, o nosso trabalho permitiu-nos compreender o complexo mundo da hidráulica romana e aprender a extrair informação de um tipo de vestígios arqueológicos, que sendo abundantes em todas as escavações, nem sempre merecem a devida atenção, pelo seu carácter fragmentário.

The present work had as the main objective to make a study of the water supply and drainage infrastructures to the Roman city of Bracara Augusta, based on the remains identified in archaeological excavations in Braga in the last 35 years under the "Projeto de Bracara Augusta". The study was conducted under an academic stage accomplished by " Unidade de Arqueologia da Universidadedo Minho” (UAUM). The vast amount of data that we were able to examine directly, from the field records, excavation reports, or databases of UAUM, allowed us to analyse, describe, and interpret a significant group of articulated structures with the hydraulic systems of city, which included structures of supply, distribution and evacuation, that ensured the operation of buildings, the pluvial water and residuals drainage and the salubrity of urban space. We analyzed several structures, which were evaluated according to a set of predefined criteria, set of descriptive records, that included the functionality and chronology, the type, the orientation, the pendent, the context and the location of archaeological remains, both within the urban morphology proposal for the city, and with the archaeological zone where they were found. The analysis obtained allowed, also, a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of different types of raw materials used in infrastructures, in particular, clay, stone and lead. It was also possible to set large morphological categories, which were divided in structures with a box shape, U shape, channel and tube, which were produced with clay (tubuli) and lead (fistulae). With the present work, we consider that the objectives what we set out under the stage held in UAUM were reached. One of the most important ones refers to the catalog of supply and drainage structures of Bracara Augusta identified until the present. On the other hand, our study allowed us to understand the complex world of Roman hydraulics and to learn how to extract information from a type of archaeological remains, which is abundant in all the excavations, not always appropriately studied by its fragmentary character.
