dc.description.abstract | Over the last few decades, we've seen more people investing in their bodies. An example of this is tattoos, which have been given greater social visibility, particularly in portuguese society. This taste for tattooing large areas of the body deserves greater attention and analytical interest from sociology. The general aim of this thesis is to identify the different uses of intensive body marking, to make known the multiplicity of its meanings and to address its potential social effects. Using qualitative methodology, with semi-structured interviews, through the snowball sampling process, the research was carried out in 2022-23 in Fafe, a smaller city than the localities portrayed by previous studies. The aim was to draw up a profile of tattoo professionals and their clients and to try to ascertain whether, in this provincial socio-cultural context, body marking practices have specific characteristics and meanings that are different from those identified by studies on the subject in Portugal some 20 years ago, at an early stage of tattoo trivialization. Despite this distance in time, the most marked difference seems to be the increasingly younger age at which young people gain the autonomy to decide to get their first tattoo. | por |
