Worldly politics and cultural magazines: subtle forms of communal self-assertion in Colonial Goa (1910s-1920s)

Abstract

This article compares two cultural magazines that circulated in Goa at the begining of the 20th century. One of them, Revista da Índia, expressed the views of the Goan Catholic community, and it was more attuned to modernist influences, in articulation with a revival of Indian heritage and myths. The other, Luz do Oriente, expressed the point of view of the Hindus of Goa, and it was published in Portuguese with the aim of claiming a voice (and a presence) in future projects for Goan society, should autonomy be achieved. Kn any case, in spite of the differences between these editorial projects, there were also similarities, and some Goan poets collaborated in both projects. In the end, both projects illustrate cultural diversity within Goa, while providing a means of expression for either the Catholic or the Hindu communities of Goa.
