A tradução técnica e a pós-edição: estágio curricular na RWS Portugal

Abstract

O presente relatório visa apresentar e analisar a experiência do estágio curricular de 3 meses, decorrido na empresa RWS Portugal, no âmbito do segundo ano do Mestrado de Tradução e Comunicação Multilingue na Universidade do Minho. Em concordância com a análise da atividade exercida no decorrer do estágio curricular, o principal enfoque do relatório gira em torno da tradução técnica e da pós-edição, à luz da crescente modernização e implementação de novos sistemas de tradução automática. Assim, será apresentada uma contextualização teórica sobre a tradução técnica, abordando noções inerentes de elevada relevância, tais como a teoria de Skopos, o conceito de translation brief, e as ferramentas CAT. Ainda no domínio teórico, serão abordados aspetos relevantes sobre a pós-edição, mais especificamente, sobre o conceito de tradução automática, em conjunto com o sistema de tradução automática mais recente denominada Neural Machine Translation. Em concordância com a contextualização teórica, serão apresentadas informações acerca do estágio e do respetivo fluxo de trabalho envolvido. Será efetuada uma análise quantitativa em termos de produtividade enquanto tradutor, e sobre a experiência com o sistema automático Neural Machine Translation e a ferramenta de controlo de qualidade utilizada. Adicionalmente, será exposta a relevância do feedback recebido ao longo do estágio, assim como das avaliações internas efetuadas na empresa. Por último, serão apresentadas as considerações finais relativamente à experiência obtida através do estágio curricular, refletindo sobre o conhecimento adquirido, o desenvolvimento de competências a nível pessoal e profissional e, ainda, sobre o estado atual da indústria da tradução.

This report aims to present and analyse the experience of the 3-month curricular internship held at RWS Portugal, within the scope of the second year of the Master's in Translation and Multilingual Communication at the University of Minho. In accordance with the analysis of the activity carried out during the curricular internship, the primary focus of the report revolves around technical translation and post-editing, in light of the increasing modernization and implementation of new machine translation systems. Thus, a theoretical contextualization of technical translation will be presented, addressing inherent notions of high relevance, such as Skopos theory, the concept of translation brief, and CAT tools. Further in the theoretical field, relevant aspects will be addressed regarding post-editing, more specifically, about the concept of machine translation, coupled with the latest automatic translation system known as Neural Machine Translation. In accordance with the theoretical contextualization, information regarding the internship and the respective workflow involved will also be presented. A quantitative analysis in terms of productivity, as well as an analysis of the experience with Neural Machine Translation and the quality control tool used will be conducted. Additionally, the relevance of the feedback received throughout the internship, along with the internal evaluations carried out in the company will be discussed. To conclude, the final reflections regarding the overall experience obtained throughout the curricular internship will be presented, reflecting on the knowledge acquired, the development of skills at a personal and professional level, and on the current state of the translation industry.
