School should play an important role in preparing students for their future, not only as professionals but also as citizens. However, it has been failing in terms of giving them the required tools to solve everyday problems. Problem-Based Learning (PBL) may give students the opportunity to learn by solving problems and in doing so it leads them to acquire knowledge and to develop competencies they will need to solve problems in their daily lives. In addition, students’ motivation to solve problems will be higher if PBL contexts give students the opportunity to formulate and solve their own problems. Students’ problems can be raised from scenarios that should be as real as possible. Nevertheless, studies focusing on the questions formulated by students from scenarios as well as on the optimal questioning conditions are rare. This study aims at investigating the questions formulated by diverse grade students and/or groups of students from three types of scenarios, in order to analyze whether, or not, some scenarios are better than other in terms of amount and quality of questions they raise. The sample was made of 175 9th and 11th graders, belonging to three schools at the Braga district. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire including three types of scenarios (text, comics, image). One part of the students was asked to formulate questions from the scenarios. At first they did it in an individual basis and afterwards in small groups. The other part of the students was asked to formulate questions only in small groups. Results indicate that students were able to formulate a few high level questions from the scenarios selected for this study but 11th grade students formulated more questions of this level than 9th grades did. In addition, no straight relationship was found between the type of scenario and the level of the questions it raised. On the other hand, students of both grade levels that formulated questions only in group raised a bit more high level questions than students that formulated questions in group after having formulated questions individually did. Individual questioning led to the lowest amount of high level questions. Hence, the results of the study suggest that asking students to formulate questions in group may lead to more high level questions and therefore may be an adequate way of starting a PBL sequence. |
