TMG - Plastified Fabrics and Other Coatings for the Automotive Industry, S.A., is a company that, as the name implies, produces several types of products whose main application is the interior of automobiles. The material used for production is PVC plastisol, which is defined by the suspension of PVC particles in a plasticizer that together with other additives form the final product. This dissertation presents an in-depth rheological characterization to determine the behavior of three selected PVC plastisols, through two types of rheometers, one of parallel plates and one of concentric cylinders. The PVC plastisols studied in the knife coating process have a shear-thinning behavior, yet they present a predominantly elastic behavior at reduced frequencies. Its viscosity changes due to the vacuum process carried out and the time the plastisols are stored, however, the temperature studied has no influence on the rheological behavior. This work also integrates a set of numerical simulations whose objective is the knowledge of the behavior of PVC plastisol in the machine during its flow. The simulations were carried out using the OpenFOAM software with the main focus on determining parameters capable of altering the fluid flow behavior. It was observed that the flow of plastisol in the gutter is changed in an impacting way motivated by the viscosity to which it is processed, yet the shear rate to which plastisol is subjected in the most restricted area of the knife is determined by the processing conditions, processing velocity, knife geometry and air gap value. There was also a dependence on the thickness of the film formed with the variation of some factors such as processing speed and viscosity of the processed plastisol. |
