Mathematics is a discipline that is characterized by the abstract nature of its concepts, which in its learning greatly contributes the use of various representation registers. Such representations challenge students to take an active role in building their knowledge, organizing and communicating their ways of thinking, which tends to influence the learning process of mathematical concepts. Considering these assumptions, this study seeks to investigate the contribution of semiotic representations in the learning of rational numbers of students in the 1st and 2nd cycles of basic education. In order to achieve this goal, it's intend to answer the following research questions: Which semiotic representation registers are most used by students in the learning of rational numbers topics? What difficulties and errors do students reveal in learning rational numbers? What perceptions do students have about the use of semiotic representation registers in the learning of rational numbers? In order to answer the questions outlined, all the information was gathered through the following data collection methods: student productions; audio recordings of classes; class questions; and questionnaires. Data analysis enable to determine several conclusions. Regarding the semiotic representation records most used by the students, a distinction is evident according to the level of education. In the 1st Cycle class of Basic Education, the pictorial register stands out in relation to the other registers, while in the 2nd Cycle class of Basic Education the use of the symbolic register prevails. However, there is a diversified use by students, depending on the type of task that is considered. Students' main difficulties in learning rational numbers relate to the representation through the pictorial register of unit fractions, the understanding of the concept of fraction, the representation of rational numbers in the numerical line, the ordering of rational numbers and the addition and subtraction of fractions with different denominators. Some of these difficulties arise from the errors presented by the students, such as the incorrect representation of unit fractions through the pictorial register, the association of the 'half' concept of several unit fractions, the absence of the fraction trace in the symbolic register, the use everyday terms to represent fractions by logging in natural language, misrepresenting rational numbers in the graphic register, and improperly adding fractions. Students indicate several advantages inherent to the use of the various registers of semiotic representation, of which we hightlight the favoring of understanding of the topics studied, the clarification of some difficulties and the expansion of choices to represent rational numbers. In terms of disadvantages, students point out that the use of various representation records tends to confuse them in their activities. |
