De uma revolução no mundo da língua portuguesa: a publicação da Grammatica de Fernão de Oliveira

Abstract

Pretende-se, com este artigo, sublinhar o caráter deveras revolucionário que representa a publicação, em 1536, da Grammatica de Fernão de Oliveira. Com efeito, o seu autor, pode asseverar-se, foi o “1.º fonólogo funcionalista”, 400 anos antes de o Funcionalismo se constituir como modelo de análise e descrição linguísticas; apresentou o 1.º esboço de Lexicologia e 1.ª teoria da composição das palavras na história da linguística românica; traçou as linhas mestras da gramática stricto sensu (ou morfossintaxe) do português do séc. XVI, isto é, identificou as categorias gramaticais que funcionam efetivamente nesta língua; elencou os princípios da Dialetologia ou, mais explicitamente, da Sociolinguística quantitativa laboviana; e, last but not least, colocou bem o acento tónico na política de língua.

The purpose of this article is to point out the truly revolutionary nature regarding the publication in 1536 of the Grammatica of Fernão de Oliveira. Indeed, one may state, its author was the “first functional phonologist”, 400 years before Functionalism became a model of analysis and linguistic description; he presented the 1st outline Lexicology and the 1st theory of composition of words in the history of Romance linguistics; he traced the master lines of the grammar stricto sensu (or morphosyntax) of the 16th century Portuguese, i.e. he identified the grammatical categories that work effectively in this language; he listed the principles of Dialectology or, more explicitly, the Labovian quantitative sociolinguistics; and, last but not least, he placed the emphasis on language policy.
