Assim, utilizaram-se três grupos: grupo WQ, com 24 sujeitos, que utilizou a WebQuest;
This study intended to investigate the possibility of using a WebQuest as a valuable teaching tool. The study compares the use of the WebQuest, which demands the creation of a portfolio and a PowerPoint presentation as a summary to the class, with the instruction delivered by the teacher and complemented with a PowerPoint presentation made by the students. The exercises were the same for the three treatments. Three groups were used, one for each treatment: the WebQuest group, with 24 subjects, that used the WebQuest; group A, constituted by 23 subjects, that attended to the teacher instruction only; and group B, with 22 subjects, that attended to the teacher instruction and did a PowerPoint presentation. Due to the characteristics of the study and of the groups, a quasi-experimental study was conducted. The WebQuest developed is a long term one with 8 sessions of 45 minutes, and the content focuses on polynomial expressions, a Mathematics chapter for the 8th grade. We used several research instruments such as: a questionnaire on computer literacy; an opinion questionnaire for each group, about the treatment received, and two knowledge tests (pre-test and post-test). The knowledge tests (pre-test and post-test) results were compared through Kruskal-Wallis test and no statistically differences were obtained in pre-test (p=0,113) or in post-test (p=0,817). Theses results led to the conclusion that the groups were equivalent before and after the treatment. We also compared the pre-test with the posttest knowledge results for each group, using the Wilcoxon signed-rank, and all of the groups achieved statistically significant differences. Theses results confirmed that all three treatments improved learning. We may conclude that the WebQuest is a valuable teaching tool. The questionnaires on computer literacy showed that students scarcely use computers at home and at school. The questionnaire of opinion of the WebQuest group showed the positive aspect of the content and organization of the information in the WebQuest, since almost every student evaluated the WebQuest in a positive way. Only 12,5% of the students mentioned that they wouldn’t like to repeat a similar experience. From the observed behaviour during the WebQuest classes, we noticed that only in the third session the students’ attitude really changed, leading to the conclusion that a short-term WebQuest wouldn’t have led to the same positive results. |
