This paper studies the theory of consciousness published by the Portuguese psychiatrist Miguel Bombarda (1851-1910). Several themes are analyzed: consciousness as an epiphenomenon of the brain, the theory of the plasticity of neuronal connections, and the influence of James’s and Lange’s theory of emotions. A number of argumentation fallacies are highlighted in the way Bombarda makes his case. It is offered a new interpretation of the meaning of the word ‘epiphenomenon’. |
