O silêncio no contemporâneo: da técnica aos média

Abstract

O silêncio, como, por antagonia, o ruído, é uma trave estruturante em várias matérias de estudos a que a sociologia e a comunicação se dedicam com alguma frequência. Ambos, o silêncio e o ruído, são, contudo, commumente trabalhados sob um ponto de vista indirecto, um meio de estudo para atingir um fim tendencialmente diferente. Nesta dissertação pretendeu-se abordar o silêncio, a sua presença e/ou ausência com um enfoque particular, e enquanto objecto central de toda uma investigação. Para tal, a sociologia e a comunicação – esta última, especialmente ancorada nos média – constituem as áreas de pensamento social em que se estrutura a reflexão que se realizou. A técnica, elemento central da era moderna, é um sub-tópico essencial na ponte conceptual entre o silêncio e o ruído. Com a técnica veio o ruído e com este celebrou-se a chegada e predominância da mesma (Breton, 1997). A partir desta perspectiva decorre uma proposta de estudo em diferentes eixos em que se declina a relação entre o silêncio e o ruído nas sociedades contemporâneas. No estudo empírico, exploratório, fizemos a análise de dois jornais nacionais de referência, o Expresso e o Jornal de Notícias, para compreendermos, sobretudo de um ponto de vista gráfico, mas não esgotado neste, como acompanharam estes dois títulos da imprensa nacional os ruídos e os silêncios da era moderna. Fizemo-lo num intervalo de 30 anos, analisando edições de 1984 e de 2014.

The silence appears as an opposite to the noise, as a structural scheme in several studies done by sociology and communication frequently. However, both silence and noise are very often approached through an indirect point of view, even though they are not the main subject of the study. In this situation, the study’s outcome will be different than the one that could be achieved if silence and noise were the focus of the study. In this dissertation, the subject of interest was the silence, its presence and/or absence. In order to do that, sociology and communication - this last one supported on media - are the areas of the social thought in which the structure of this reflection was held. The technique, a central element of the modern era, is an essential sub-topic of the conceptual bridge established between the silence and the noise. The technique brought the noise, which led to the arrival and prevalence of the first (Breton, 1997). Through this perspective, runs a study proposal of different aspects, such as the silence commercialization, the political silence and the noise on a geographical scale. In the empiric study, the researchable one, “Jornal de Notícias” and “Expresso”, two Portuguese newspapers of high reference were analyzed, so that the graphical development of both silence and noise during the modern era could be understood. This approach was done by analyzing the newspapers published from 1984 and 2014.
