diferentes métodos de recolha de dados: teste diagnóstico, produções realizadas pelos alunos;
A representação
This study aims to analyze the contribution of multiple mathematical representations in the teaching and learning process of the derivative of a function on an 11th grade class. This is a qualitative and interpretative research whose goal is to answer the following questions: (1) How students use different representations in learning the derivative of a function (2) What are the advantages and disadvantages of different representations in learning the derivative of a function (3) What are students perceptions on the use of different representations in their learning of the derivative of a function To answer these questions we have examined different methods on data collection: diagnostic test, productions performed by students; questionnaires; questions at the end of some classes; and audio recording of lectures. The conclusion of this study points to the use of different forms of representation by the students. Despite a tendency to the algebraic representation, most students also used effectively the numerical representations, graphical and tabular. Some of them established relationships between different types of representations which enabled the understanding of the derivative of a function theme, allowing you to increase the convergence of the concept definition to the concept image of the concepts covered. The study made it possible to identify situations in which students typically rely on a given representation. The numerical and algebraic representations were used primarily to determine the image as the object, in particular for topical relative extremes. The graphical representation was used in the comparative study of the function with its derivative or, generally, whenever the students wanted an overall picture about the behavior of the function. Students resorted mostly to tabular representation to study the signal, the monotony and relative extreme of a function, and in some cases, the conversion between the algebraic and graphical representation. Students deal with the representations and learn the procedures to a purely algorithmic level failing to dissociate the mathematical object from its representation. |
