This research builds on the theoretical and methodological principles of Linguistic Discourse Analysis, as well as of Linguistic Pragmatics, Text Linguistics, theories of Enunciation and Socio-discursive Interactionism. This research also receives the influence of Sociology, more specifically Sociology of Childhood, in order to understand the child as an individual who is an integrating part and member of a society. Cognisant of the great importance that school textbooks undertake in the process of teaching and learning, we analyse the texts from the Portuguese textbooks of the 4th grade in order to list the images of the child and childhood that they build. Through the selected verbal material, interpretative repertoires are revealed which enable the evocation of frames capable of normalising ways of being and acting of the childrencharacters of the texts, transforming these mental images into prototypical images of children in general. Texts are classified according to their dominant sequence, and we seek to understand the characteristics of each typology and pragmatic function they perform among elected readers. Referential expressions of the child are revealed to understand the strategies used by the enunciator to refer to children and their worlds. We analyse the physical spaces in which the children of the texts move to identify the prototypical spaces of children. Furthermore, we list the activities that the same children perform and which represent the activities that society ascribes as suitable for children. We also uncover the presence of the children's voice in the linguistic materiality of the texts, identifying the enunciative strategies that allow to record (or not) that voice in them. As a complement, we analyse the roles that illustrations represent among those same texts. Each topic of study complements the others, building a meaningful whole which allows to acknowledge what, on one hand, the authors of the texts/textbooks, and, on the other hand, the established powers (and society) consider to be the images of children and childhood which are important to normalise. |
