Misturas Betuminosas Temperadas (MBT) e Semi-temperadas (MBST). Assim, o impacto
expectável para as misturas betuminosas in situ.
The increasing concern with reducing the energy consumption and with the gradual increasing of the ozone layer hole, have been leading to the development of new technologies that are less harmful to the environment as well as economically more beneficial and profitable. Bearing in mind this idea, several studies of bituminous mixtures that lead to a decrease in the production and compaction temperatures are being carried out, and these mixtures were called Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) and Half-Warm Mix Asphalt (HWMA). Therefore, the environmental and economic impact caused by these new types of mixtures would be lower when compared to the conventional Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). Considering that these types of technologies are still raising some doubts, it should be proved that their behavior and performance are identical to the HMA. In this thesis, a comparative analysis of the characteristics a conventional HMA mix (AC 14 surface 50/70 BB) and a new HWMA mix is carried out. This mixture will be performed at low temperatures, by injecting pressurized water and air in the bitumen, thus originating asphalt foam that coats the aggregates. Conventionally, several tests and procedures were performed according to the European EN 12697 and EN 13108 series of standards, i.e., the bituminous mixtures were characterized through their performance and behavior. The bitumens were subjected to the “Ring & Ball” test, dynamic viscosity test, penetration at 25° C test and rheology test, in order to have a complete and crucial characterization of this material. The bituminous mixtures were tested in order to evaluate the maximum theoretical and bulk densities, the Marshall Stability and deformation, the indirect tensile strength in the water sensitivity test and the compactability test, the rutting resistance, stiffness, fatigue resistance and the affinity between aggregates and bitumen, thus resulting in a detailed study of the expected behavior and performance of the mixtures in situ. The results obtained with this work make it possible to conclude that the performance and behavior of the mixture with foamed bitumen, in particular when properly designed, can be similar to that of a conventional HMA mixture, thus validating its use in road pavements. |
