O primeiro
capítulo é dedicado a três jogos matemáticos: o jogo do semáforo, do final do século XX, o
No terceiro e último capítulo,
Mathematics is one of the curriculum syllabus that has greater social impact, specially due to the poor performance of many students. As a justification of this performance, students often refer to mathematics as being boring, not motivating, specially because mathematical contents are taught as something already established. The challenge of thinking and of creating is not always present in study activities of mathematical topics. One way of correcting this situation is through recreational mathematics. What does recreational mathematics mean? An immediate response is “ it is that mathematics that challenges us to think, that entertains and amuses us when you think about it.” Of course, any mathematician argues that he has fun with all the math involved in his work and so all mathematics would be recreational mathematics. We must, therefore, think of a more precise definition. When we speak of recreational mathematics we mean not only mathematical games and puzzles, but also other activities of fun and educational nature. With or without competitive edge, we want to find the solution of a certain problem. The search for the problem’s solution does not always require a thorough knowledge of mathematics. Hence mathematical recreations attract the curiosity of non-mathematicians and inspire us to its study. This is the great pedagogical objective of recreational mathematics. In this monography, we present and study several mathematical recreations. The first chapter is dedicated to three mathematical games: the traffic light game, from the late twentieth century, the sprouts game, from the middle of the twentieth century and oware, the oldest known mathematical game, which is more than 7000 years old. In the second chapter, which is about mathematical puzzles, we work with Sudoku, Magical Squares and Tangram. In the third and last chapter, we present some activities that can be considered to be recreational mathematics as they can be performed in a playful way. These activities involve numbers, areas, distances and geometric transformations. All the activities presented in this thesis can be performed and explored in mathematics classes of the basic curriculum, on the development of topics of mathematics, of skills, such as reasoning and mental calculation, and of attitudes, such as persistence and joy of learning. Having this in mind, we intend that this monography also supports teachers of basic curriculum. |
