This Report presents a project carried out in a real learning context of history and geography subjects, in a 9th grade classroom. The selected theme was the using of televisions or newspapers news by students in the classroom context, intending to answer the following question: How students do interpret the information conveyed by television and newspaper and how students and what historical and geographical understanding do they get? Therefore our purposes were simultaneously to analyse the geographical and historical interpretation and identify the historical and geographical knowledge that students construct from those sources. The theme selected for the History relates to the "Democratic Portugal: the Revolution of April 25 and the revolutionary process" and focuses on the period from the establishment of democracy since the Carnation Revolution (1974). Regarding to geography, the theme was "The greenhouse effect: consequences and measures", which explains the problems associated with the increasing greenhouse effect. In history lessons two different newspapers on contemporary news describing the same event, the demonstrations of the people on April 25, 1974 were collected. A questionnaire was designed based on the cross analysis of these two sources to realize the historical interpretation developed by the students. In Geography the instrument used consisted of television news, video recorded, and a questionnaire composed of a set of questions aiming the message interpretation by students, and their questioning of the importance of the issue for the current society. The data obtained in the two subject matters were analysed in order to perceive how the students interpret the information conveyed by the messages of those news, as elements of the historical and geographical understanding. This pedagogical intervention provided personal empowerment as professional in the teaching of history and geography, in the investigative domain, and also was seen as important in the reflective process about teaching practices, permitting to understand the process of source interpretation in history and geography by the students. |
