a interpretar bem a situação real estudada.
This work’s purpose was to analyze the contribution of mathematical modeling tasks in the learning of exponential and logarithmic functions by 12th grade students. I focused my teaching practice upon answers for the following questions: (i) What activities involving modeling tasks can be developed by students in the study of exponential and logarithmic functions? (ii) What difficulties are revealed by the students in activities of mathematical modeling in the study of exponential and logarithmic functions? (iii) What expectations do students have towards task modeling when learning exponential and logarithmic functions? To answer these questions I used the following data collection methods: students' productions; questionnaires; interviews; observations and documental analysis. With regard to the activities of students in group modeling tasks data analysis concluded that even though they are working in groups, students first work individually and only later do they try to engage in discussion with colleagues. However, when involved in the production of work to be given to the teacher, data shows a greater involvement from all members of the team. As regards the development of the various stages programmed in the tasks of mathematical modeling, the students showed no significant constraints. Their difficulties were centered on the interpretation of real situations under study, as well as the manipulation of data phases for obtaining the mathematical model. Regarding their outlook in what concerns the levels of learning of the topics involving mathematical modeling tasks, the students have globally identified clear gains, stating that such tasks help them to better understand the concepts. They also described that the modeling tasks require greater thinking processes than solving problems by directly applying what they learn; interpreting the real situation under study and understanding the usefulness of what they learn . A significant part of the students considered that too much time was lost with modeling tasks, as this type of work is not expected or evaluated in the national exams. |
