Jovem adulto ou adulto jovem?: caminhos percorridos de jovens que voltaram à escola

Abstract

A presente dissertação é o resultado de uma investigação com jovens adultos inseridos no âmbito do ensino de Segunda Oportunidade de uma escola secundária do distrito de Braga- Portugal. Teve como objetivo compreender os sentidos que estes sujeitos atribuem à sua presença naquele tipo de ensino de forma a analisar os caminhos que os mesmos percorreram, compreendendo a sua trajetória escolar desde o abandono até ao retorno escolar. Para o efeito, utilizou-se como metodologia o estudo de caso por se considerar o mais adequado face ao objeto de estudo. No que se refere às técnicas de recolha de dados, optou-se por utilizar como principal técnica de investigação a entrevista semiestruturada. Foi também realizada análise documental e as perceções da investigadora foram narradas nas notas de terreno. Para a análises dos dados, utilizou-se a análise de conteúdo, construindo categorias e subcategorias a partir de unidades de registo selecionadas. Na discussão teórica é elaborada uma reflexão em torno de algumas questões norteadoras envolvendo a categoria social Juventude, a construção da escola pública em Portugal e a educação de adultos, ressaltando as políticas de educação de segunda oportunidade. Por sua vez, no trabalho empírico busca-se problematizar as muitas e diferentes significações captadas no discurso dos jovens adultos. Importa referir que, após a escuta sensível dos relatos dos jovens adultos, defende-se a ideia da implementação de uma educação que compreenda a especificidade dos jovens adultos enquanto estudantes oferecendo-lhes assim a possibilidade de uma finalização digna e eficaz do seu ciclo escolar. A proposta também assenta no reconhecimento destes para além da condição de estudantes, de modo a que sejam compreendidas suas identidades, suas representações, anseios e singularidades, concebendo-os como sujeitos sociais capazes de transformar positivamente a realidade na qual estão inseridos. Os resultados da investigação apontam como principais motivos do abandono escolar a ausência dos recursos financeiros, que os fizeram ingressar de forma precoce no trabalho e o desinteresse pelos saberes académicos. Relativamente às razões do retorno à escola, os jovens adultos revelam elementos que contribuíram para isso, como o apoio da família, a motivação e valorização pessoal, pelo desejo de melhorar as oportunidades de emprego e a oportunidade face a existência de alguns cursos de Segunda Oportunidade. Especificamente, as principais razões da escolha de um Curso EFA, prendem-se com o que consideram ser a facilidade e rapidez do curso (que se torna eficiente para quem trabalha ou não tem tempo) e a possibilidade de substituição de carga horária. Os resultados a que se chegou necessitariam agora da construção de objetos de estudo complementares, que permitam conhecer e compreender o fenómeno na sua globalidade.

This dissertation is the result of an investigation with young adults placed under the teaching of a Second Chance program at a secondary school in the district of Braga, Portugal. It aimed to understand the meanings that these individuals give to their presence in that type of education in order to analyze the paths that they traveled, including their trajectory since leaving school until retuning to it. For this purpose, we used as methodology the case study, considering it the most suitable in relation to the object of study. With regard to the techniques of data collection, we chose to use as the main investigation technique the semistructured interview. Document analysis was also performed and the perceptions of the investigator were reported in the field notes. For data analysis, we used the content analysis, constructing categories and subcategories from selected registration units. In the theoretical discussion is elaborated a reflection around some guiding questions involving the social category Youth, the building of the public school in Portugal and adult education, emphasizing the education policies for second opportunity. In turn, in the empirical work we seek to problematize the many and different meanings captured in the speech of young adults. It should be noted that, after sensible listening to the reports of young adults, we defend the idea of implementing an education which comprehends the specific needs of young adults as students, offering them so the possibility of a dignified and effective completion of their schooling. The proposal also relies on their recognition beyond the condition of students, so that their identities, their representations, desires and singularities are understood, conceiving them as social actors able to positively transform the reality in which they live. The research results indicated that the main reasons for the dropout are the lack of financial resources, which made them join so early the labor market, and the disinterest for academic knowledge. Regarding the reasons for returning to school, young adults reveal elements that contributed to this, as family support, personal motivation and development, willing better employment opportunities and the opportunity in view of the existence of some Second Chance courses. Specifically, the main reasons for choosing an EFA* course relate to what they consider its ease and speed (which becomes useful for those who work or have no time) and the possibility of replacing workload. The reached results now would require the construction of additional objects of study that allow to know and understand the phenomenon in its entirety.
