The principal purpose of this work was study the effect of thermal and mechanical fatigue in the time life of metal-ceramic dental restoration, namely in the adhesion of the two materials. In order to guarantee the longevity of dental restoration and the solicitations of the oral environment, the restoration needs excellent bond strength between the metal and ceramic. For this study, the specimens were manufactured under two different configurations of CoCrMo and Opaque Porcelain namely conventional way, porcelain fused to metal (PFM) where the temperature is the only agent of bonding between the two materials. The other route, Interlayer- HP, specimens were hot pressed and prepared with a composite interlayer (50metal-50ceramic; %Vol.) at the metal-ceramic interface. The specimens were manufactured and standardized in cylindrical format and then submitted to thermal (3000, 6000 and 12000 cycles; between 5ºC and 60ºC; dwell time: 30s) and mechanical (25000, 50000 and 100000 cycles under a load of 50N; 1.6Hz) cycling. The shear bond strength was performed in a universal testing machine (crosshead speed: 0.5 mm/min), using a special device to concentrate the tension at the metal-ceramic interface and the load was applied until the fracture. Interfaces of fractured as well as undestroyed specimens were examined with SEM/EDS. The results were analyzes by ANOVA (two-way) and Tukey test (p<0.05). In the case of PFM specimens at the end of 12000 thermal and 100000 mechanical cycles, the bond strength was in the order of 63.10±28.00MPa, meanwhile in Interlayer-HP specimens after the same fatigue conditions the bond strength was 227.19±13.33MPa. After this work it was conclude that the introduction of a composite Interlayer, with the same among of the two materials to bond, and the technique that ally the pressure to temperature, increase significantly (p<0.05) the bond strength of the specimens. After fatigue test the bond strength in Interlayer-HP specimens was 260% higher than in PFM specimens. Such results confirm Interlayer-HP restorations as an alternative to conventional PFM ones, in the manufacture of stronger and durable dental restorations. |
