Envolveu a análise quantitativa e
interpretativa. The present study focuses on the beliefs and practices of a group of foreign language teachers concerning students’ self-assessment. It was carried out in a lower secondary school, in the district of Viana do Castelo, during the school year 2008/2009. Based on the assumption that self-assessment fosters an increasing autonomy in students’ ability to self-regulate their own learning, we intended to understand the value these teachers give to this practice and to contribute to the reconstruction of their beliefs and practices of self-assessment. So, the study aims at fulfilling the following objectives: a) to identify the beliefs related to selfassessment in foreign language learning; b) to characterize the perceptions of practice of selfassessment and confronting them with the teachers’ beliefs; to reconstruct the beliefs and practice of this group of teachers; d) to produce self-assessment materials for foreign language classes. This case study used an interpretative methodology and it involved quantitative and qualitative analysis of the collected data which resulted from the following sources of evidence: a questionnaire applied to all FL teachers; workshops with those teachers; analysis of self-assessment materials being used by the teachers and of the materials produced in the workshops. The study, which was developed in cooperation with another teacher doing a study on formative evaluation with the same group of teachers, also intended to contribute to the development of professional growth of the teachers involved by a collaborative peer supervision process. The results allow us to determine that this group of FL teachers values self-assessment procedures as a means of promoting self-regulated learning and indicate a gradual approximation of the participants’ beliefs to their practices. The results also hint at changes in the production of selfassessment materials as well as a greater predisposition in implementing more systematic selfassessment practices in their foreign language classes. The main limitations are linked to the reduced number of FL teachers, belonging to a specific school, involved in this study, which makes it impossible to generalize to other educational contexts as well as to the use of an interpretative methodology of the gathered data. |
