Viver em penitência: os irmãos terceiros franciscanos e as suas associações, Braga e S. Paulo (1672-1822)

Abstract

Analisar as Ordens Terceiras franciscanas situadas em Braga e São Paulo, desde meados do século XVII até 1822, em seus diversificados aspectos, foi o propósito desse trabalho. Entretanto, devido a riqueza do objeto, foram selecionados alguns temas preferenciais buscando atender aos objetivos inicialmente propostos. A avaliação das duas agremiações buscou compreender a dinâmica inerente a essas instituições em dois pontos do império português no intuito de compreender a valorização das Ordens seculares franciscanas, no período em análise. O estudo comparativo propiciou a ampliação da análise, pois permitiu verificar alguns traços gerais na atuação desses institutos independentemente da sua localização. Inicialmente, foram contemplados os momentos de ereção das duas associações, seus antecedentes e instituições envolvidas nesses processos. Nesse sentido, buscou-se traçar um paralelo entre o contexto e a formação das duas Ordens Terceiras em Braga e São Paulo. Também, o desenvolvimento dessas agremiações e o quadro religioso circundante foi analisado, visando compreender as estratégias de seus administradores para promover os sodalícios nesses dois campos religiosos. Igualmente, o conjunto de associados foi estudado, permitindo verificar os grupos de destaque nas agremiações terciárias e aqueles que encontraram nessas associações espaços de promoção social, de sociabilidades e de apoio material e espiritual. As atividades religiosas, como um elemento de destaque no cotidiano dessas instituições, também receberam uma análise detalhada. A centralidade das cerimônias, tanto privadas quanto coletivas, expressava-se no forte investimento humano e material que realizavam as Ordens Terceiras franciscanas nesse aspecto. A vivência religiosa intensa manifestava-se igualmente na obrigatoriedade de seus irmãos em participar de diversificados exercícios espirituais, voltados sobretudo para prática penitencial. Porém, também a assistência compunha o leque de ações desses institutos. Embora, se voltassem essencialmente para o seu interior, as Ordens Terceiras franciscanas assistiram seus irmãos nos momentos de pobreza e enfermidade, constituindo-se em importantes pontos de apoio aos seculares em distintos locais. Paralelamente, o valor simbólico dessas práticas assistenciais mostrou-se relevante e promoveu a visibilidade dessas associações em contextos diversos. Para realizar as atividades de cunho religioso ou assistencial estas instituições necessitavam de um suporte financeiro. A análise das finanças das Ordens Terceiras demonstraram a sua capacidade para angariar recursos e também o direcionamento dado as receitas, sobressaindo a aplicação na manutenção do culto e nas celebrações litúrgicas.

The purpose of this work was to analyze the Third Order of St. Francis located in Braga and São Paulo since the mid-seventeenth century until 1822, in their different aspects. However, due to the richness of the object, some preferential themes were selected in order to meet the objectives originally proposed. The evaluation of the two associations sought to understand the dynamics inherent to these institutions in two locations of the Portuguese empire in order to understand the value of the secular Orders of St. Francis, particularly during the eighteenth century. The comparative study enabled the expansion of the analysis, allowing us to verify some general traits in the performance of these institutions regardless of their location. Initially, the moments of establishment of the two associations, their history, and institutions involved in these processes were contemplated. Accordingly, we sought to draw a parallel between the context and the formation of two religious orders in Braga and São Paulo. Also, the development of these associations and the surrounding religious framework was analyzed in order to understand the strategies of its managers to promote the sodality in these two religious fields. Also, the set of members was analyzed, allowing us to verify the groups highlighted in tertiary associations and those who found in these associations spaces of social promotion of sociability as well as material and spiritual support. Religious activities, as a highlighted element in the daily work of these institutions, also received a detailed analysis. The centrality of the ceremonies, both private and collective, was expressed in the strong human and material investment performed by the Third Order of St. Francis in this aspect. The intense religious experience was also manifested in the obligation of his brothers to participate in diverse spiritual exercises, mainly about penitential practice. However, the assistance was part of the range of actions of these institutions. Although, essentially turned to their inner life, the Third Order of St. Francis assisted their brothers in times of poverty and disease, thus becoming important points of support for the secular in different locations. In addition, the symbolic value of these care practices was relevant and promoted the visibility of these associations in different contexts. To carry out the care and religious activities these institutions needed financial support. The analysis of the finances of religious orders has shown their ability to raise money and also the direction given to revenues, highlighting its application in the maintenance of worship and in liturgical celebrations.
