Welding lines are formed as a consequence of the separation and subsequent joining of two or more flow fronts, occurring in the flows inherent to the polymers and metals transformation processes. Generally, in the produced parts these regions are the less resistant than the remaining. This work will focus on the study of the effect of welding lines in extruded thermoplastic profiles, since there is no systematic study in the literature on this subject, unlike injection of polymers and metals. For the development of this study it was necessary to devise an extrusion die where the formation of these lines occurs in a controlled manner. The extrusion die was designed with the purpose of allowing changing the axial location (in the flow direction) of the weld line formation The study will include three main steps: selection of the materials to be used in the extrusion runs and their rheological characterization, extrusion and characterization of profiles produced at different processing conditions and, finally, systematization of the results (i.e., establishing relationships processing conditions-quality of the welding line). The results of this study demonstrate the weld line affects the thickness uniformity of the cross-section and the strain at rupture; the weld line does not affect the yield stress; the extrusion temperature has no significant effect on the quality of the weld line. |
