"Género, identidade e desejo": a construção do feminino nos filmes de Jane Campion

Abstract

Pretende-se aqui fazer uma abordagem da obra cinematográfica da realizadora neozelandesa Jane Campion, a qual revela um forte pendor feminista no modo como constrói narrativas que operam uma transformação de modelos cinematográficos em que a mulher surge estereotipada como o objecto do “olhar masculino”. Nos seus filmes, pelo contrário, o enfoque recai sempre sobre uma protagonista que busca o auto-conhecimento, passando este pela descoberta da verdade do seu próprio corpo (feminino).

This paper aims at addressing the cinematography of the New Zealander director Jane Campion, taking into account the way she deconstructs preestablished notions of the feminine. It is argued here that the work of Jane Campion shows a deep feminist disposition in the way it builds narratives that operate a transformation in traditional film patterns where woman always appears stereotypically projected as an object of the “masculine gaze”. On the contrary, in her films the focus is always set on the female protagonist, who is in search of her self-knowledge; this is, in turn, linked to the self-discovery of the truth of her own (female) body; here, the “female gaze” seems to impose itself.
