Resumo(s)In orthopedic implants development products, a major goal is to meet mechanical properties matching those of human bone as closely as possible, as well as adequate combination of biocompatibility and bioactivity. Shear controlled orientation in injection molding or Scorim, meets this goal by inducing an improved morphology or microstructure into moldings to substantially enhance the essential material properties. Scorim has been studied with two types of materials: a high molecular weight polyethylene-based bioinert material for permanent applications; and biodegradable starch-based blends for temporary applications. In both cases, bioactive reinforcements are used to promote osteoinductive behavior and boost stiffness.
