Impacto do recurso a screencasts no ensino das TIC : um estudo de caso no módulo de gestão de base de dados

Abstract

A escola dispõe hoje de um conjunto de equipamentos e ferramentas que têm permitido a integração das TIC (Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação) nas práticas letivas. O Plano Tecnológico da Educação (PTE), sendo o maior programa de modernização tecnológica das escolas portuguesas e tendo vários eixos de atuação, tem permitido às escolas possuir estruturas modernas e eficientes que importa rentabilizar. A disciplina de Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação (TIC) dos cursos profissionais apresenta no seu currículo o módulo de Gestão de Base de Dados que apresenta níveis de complexidade elevados e que leva os alunos a desinteressarem-se pela temática. Atendendo a esta desmotivação, um professor inovador, com os recursos que hoje tem ao seu dispor, pode muito facilmente alterar as práticas e rentabilizar os meios. É neste contexto que surge o presente estudo, e cujo objetivo foi o de averiguar se os screencasts (capturas/ gravações digitais de ações/ interações do utilizador no computador) podem ser um caminho para, de forma autónoma, interessante e ao seu ritmo, os alunos adquirirem as competências preconizadas no currículo da disciplina de TIC. O âmbito do estudo foi limitado à unidade de Gestão de Base de Dados do 10.º ano de um curso profissional de técnico de instalações eléctricas. Em termos metodológicos, o estudo adoptou o formato de estudo de caso. Durante um mês foram aplicados onze screencasts elaborados pelo investigador e relacionados com a utilização de um programa de Base de Dados, tendo como objetivos investigar se a aplicação de screencasts favorece a aprendizagem e o desenvolvimento de competências TIC, se ajuda na motivação dos alunos, se permite a rentabilização dos dispositivos móveis, se ajuda na melhoria da opinião sobre a disciplina de TIC e qual a modalidade a que os alunos mais aderem em termos de duração. Os dados foram recolhidos através de questionários aplicados aos alunos, das observações de aula e de outros registos elaborados pelo investigador. Os resultados obtidos revelaram que o recurso aos screencasts favorece a aprendizagem e o desenvolvimento de competências, favorece a motivação para a aprendizagem de conceitos de base de dados, que os alunos preferem os screencasts mais curtos e que ainda é demasiado cedo para se falar de uma rentabilização das tecnologias móveis (m-learning). Em relação à opinião que os alunos têm sobre a disciplina TIC, não se verificou uma melhoria das suas opiniões, considerando os discentes que as TIC são mais exigentes e complexas do que esperariam. A maioria dos alunos recomenda a utilização de screencasts noutras disciplinas e todos reconheceram que os screencasts os ajudaram a aprender a trabalhar com as Bases de Dados. Alguns alunos foram pouco empenhados na aplicação dos screencasts, mantendo essa mesma atitude ao longo do ano letivo; no entanto, os alunos mais empenhados conseguiram rentabilizar os screencasts que os ajudaram a adquirir os conhecimentos sobre o funcionamento das Bases de Dados.

The school now has a set of equipment and tools that have allowed the integration of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in teaching practices. The Technological Plan for Education (PTE), being the largest programme of technological modernization of Portuguese schools and possessing several lines of action, has allowed schools to have modern and efficient structures that need to be monetized. The school subject of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in professional courses presents in their curriculum the Database Management module which has high levels of complexity and leads students to lose interest in this issue. Given this demotivation, an innovative teacher, with resources at his disposal, will necessarily have to change practices and monetize his resources. It is in this context that the present study was made, whose purpose was to ascertain whether the screencasts (catch / digital recordings of actions/ interactions of the user on the computer) can be a way for students, independently, interestingly and at their own pace, to acquire the ICT skills. The scope of the study was limited to the unit of Database Management, a topic of the curriculum of ICT, 10th form, of a professional technician of electrical installations. Methodologically, the study adopted a case study format. During one month eleven screencasts, created by the researcher and related to the use of a database programme, were applied, with the objective to investigate whether the application of screencasts promotes learning and ICT skills development, if it helps to motivate the students, if the mobile devices were effectively used, if it helps in improving the view of ICT and the modality students adhere most in terms of duration. Data was collected through questionnaires to students, classroom observations and other records kept by the investigator. The results showed that the use of screencasts promotes learning and skill development, enhances motivation for learning concepts of databases, students prefer the shortest screencasts and that it is still early to speak of a profitable mobile technology (mlearning). Concerning the students‟ belief about the ICT subject, their opinion didn´t improve and they found ICT more demanding and complex than they expected. Students mostly recommend the use of screencasts in other school subjects and everyone assumed the view that the screencasts helped them learn to work with the database. Students were slightly committed to apply screencasts and maintained this attitude during the school year; however, the more engaged students were able to monetize the screencasts allowing them to acquire knowledge about the functioning of the database.
