fomentem as desejadas escolhas. The decrease in the number of students that choose to follow science related university programmes and professional careers has become a matter of concern at both the national and the international levels for it has negative consequences at the scientific, technological, and economic levels as well as for the scientific literacy level of the coming generations. Several studies have focused on students’ choices and tried to understand why some students choose science while others avoid it as much as they can. As far as it is known, in Portugal there as no studies focusing on students leaving compulsory education (9th grade) science choices. Thus, this study aims at understanding why some students chose science, namely Physical Sciences, when they moved to 10th grade, and why others chose areas that do not include such disciplines. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire that was developed for the purpose of this study. Two hundred and twenty one 10th graders were enrolled in the study. They attended secondary schools in the Braga district and had registered either for science and technology secondary school programmes (111) or for other secondary school programmes that do not include Physical Sciences (110). The results of the study indicate that a number of factors seem to have a positive effect on students’ choices, leading them to choose science related areas. These factors are as follows: the high motivation level induced in students by the practical component; the high relevance that students perceive on the themes dealt with in science courses; the inter-relationship between Physical Sciences and everyday phenomena; the students’ high level of success in science; the perceived relevance of science areas for professional careers. The main factors that seem to lead students to not choose science areas are as follows: students’ high interest in other areas; students’ dislike of Physical Sciences; the perceived dependence of Physical Sciences on Mathematics; the students’ low success in science courses; the perceived low relevance of the themes dealt with in science courses; the high conceptual complexity of physical sciences. Results also indicate that 10th graders had not yet taken final decisions on the area they were planning to follow at university. In addition, it seems that students need support to take informed well-grounded decisions. Therefore, action must be taken in order to provide them with the information and competences required to do so. |
