psicologia do indivíduo e a cosmologia metafísica.
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the pre-eminent role that the human soul played in Seneca's philosophical thought. To this end, his writings were analyzed, as well as the philosophical traditions with which Seneca came into contact. The theoretical understanding of the nature of the human soul, its origin, forms and dispositions, especially within the scope of a science that has self knowledge as its main objective, and the practical understanding of the soul, which manifested itself through the therapy of passions and vices, were also addressed. Seneca's psychology was studied, namely the theory of representation of the external world. The consequences of Seneca's psychological notions were also studied, such as the subject's ability to self-determine through the values of good and virtue, which are connatural to him. Some connections between the psychology of the individual and metaphysical cosmology were explored. The figure of the wise man is decisive in the relationship between moral doctrine, psychological notions and metaphysics. Seneca's writings were analyzed on the hypothetical capacity of the human soul to embrace cosmic life. Seneca's most important thesis in this regard was emphasized: the understanding of the soul has its foundation in the final experimentation within oneself, because the moral nature of the soul is based on reason, and this is what allows it to reach an inner agreement with the cosmic whole. It is on this basis that the possibility of a harmonious, that is, happy, life is supported. The decisive concepts of Seneca's work that are studied here, such as those of space, time, event and physical nature, all derive, ultimately, from the representation that the moral subject has of himself, and, therefore, are dependent on a science of the self, from which the very revelation of existence as a good or an evil emerges. Here, knowledge of the many traditions about the soul of the schools of Ancient Philosophy is of great importance. For all this, it is argued here that Seneca was a thinker who went beyond the normal condition of a philosopher, as well as a Stoic philosopher, having been a profound student of the human condition. In addition, an exploration of Seneca's eclectic interests is also proposed, including knowledge of nature. It will be shown that this knowledge was used in Seneca's exploration of the depths of the soul. We conclude with the defense of the thesis that self-science and self-care were for Seneca the main subjects of his philosophical activity, as the human soul is above contingent conditions, which are less real or indifferent to it. |
