Papel da tradução no teatro: importância da troca e compreensão cultural

Abstract

O presente relatório insere-se no âmbito do Mestrado em Tradução e Comunicação Multilingue da Universidade do Minho e reflete o estágio curricular, com duração de quatro meses, realizado no Círculo de Cultura Teatral / Teatro Experimental do Porto (TEP), uma companhia de teatro portuguesa fundada em 1953 por António Pedro, um poeta, dramaturgo e encenador português. O TEP foi uma das companhias pioneiras do teatro experimental em Portugal e teve um papel importante na renovação do teatro português na década de 1950. Ao longo dos anos, a companhia apresentou peças de autores consagrados como Samuel Beckett, Jean-Paul Sartre, Eugène Ionesco e Fernando Arrabal, assim como peças de autores portugueses como José Régio e António Pedro. A companhia teve também um papel importante na formação de atores e encenadores em Portugal. Muitos dos seus membros tornaram-se figuras importantes no teatro português, incluindo Ruy de Carvalho, Carmen Dolores, João Mota e Ricardo Pais. Apesar de ter passado por várias mudanças ao longo dos anos, o TEP continua a ser uma companhia de teatro ativa e relevante em Portugal. Este relatório apresenta a instituição acolhedora e um enquadramento teórico sobre o trabalho. Ao longo do enquadramento teórico, serão abordados temas relacionados com o processo criativo envolvido na tradução literária, o impacto da tradução na receção e interpretação da peça e a importância do contexto histórico e cultural. Devido à quantidade e diversidade do trabalho desenvolvido, decidi destacar três tópicos que sobressaíram ao longo do estágio. Estes são a tradução de rimas, de expressões idiomáticas e finalmente, a adaptação do website oficial do TEP para francês, temas em que o papel da tradução na cultura de chegada teve extrema importância.

This report is part of the Master's in Multilingual Translation and Communication at the University of Minho and reflects the four-month curricular internship carried out at the Círculo de Cultura Teatral / Teatro Experimental do Porto (TEP), a Portuguese theater company founded in 1953 by António Pedro, a Portuguese poet, playwright, and director. TEP was one of the pioneering experimental theater companies in Portugal and played an important role in the renewal of Portuguese theater in the 1950s. Over the years, the company presented works by established authors such as Samuel Beckett, Jean-Paul Sartre, Eugène Ionesco, and Fernando Arrabal, as well as works by Portuguese authors like José Régio and António Pedro. The company also played a significant role in training actors and directors in Portugal. Many of its members became important figures in Portuguese theater, including Ruy de Carvalho, Carmen Dolores, João Mota, and Ricardo Pais. Despite undergoing various changes over the years, TEP remains an active and relevant theater company in Portugal. This report introduces the host institution and provides a theoretical framework for the work. Supported by the theoretical framework, themes related to the creative process involved in literary translation, the impact of translation on the reception and interpretation of the play and the importance of historical and cultural context will be addressed. Due to the quantity and diversity of the work carried out, I decided to focus on three topics that stood out during the internship. These are the translation of rhymes, idiomatic expressions, and finally, the adaptation of the official TEP website into French, topics in which the role of translation in the target culture was of utmost importance.
