Additive Manufacturing of multifunctional discrete ceramic columns

Abstract

[Excerpt] In addition to the potential economic and material sustainability benefits, Additive Manufacturing (AM) also enhances mass customization, with almost no formal limit on what can be produced, and taking no more time in production than standard systems do. Supported by computational design logics, AM opened new fields of research and development in architectural design, building materials and the construction industry, ena-bling geometric freedom that can result in the design of geometries for specific require-ments, optimizing the design and functions of traditional systems (Sarakinioti et al, 2020). This project addresses the design and produc-tion of real-scale architectural columns with modular ceramic blocks made by Liquid Depo-sition Modelling (LDM), proposing the develop-ment of column systems incorporating fit-tings as well the possible integration of infrastructures, insulation and ventilation capacities.
