In the present study entitled “Learning to know the World through Experimental Activities: An intervention in Pre-School Education and in 1st Cycle of Basic Education”, is analyzed the contribute of experimental activities on the formation of conscious, communicative, critical and informed citizens, capable of inserting themselves into society and transforming it. In this investigation have participated 9 children from Pre School with ages between 3 and 5 years old, and a class from the 3rd year composed by 10 students. The objectives were, with the exception of one, common to both contexts and are shown below: i) characterize the evolution of procedural knowledge; ii) characterize the evolution of oral language skills and the approach to the writing / Portuguese; iii) characterize the evolution of cooperative work skills (1st Cycle of Basic Education); iv) characterize the evolution of substantive knowledge about the phenomena and transformations od the physical and natural environment; v) to identify the relevance attributed by children to experimental activities; vi) to identify the facilitating factors for the implementation of experimental activities; vii) to identify the difficulties felt by children in the execution of the experimental activities. In order to achieve the mentioned objectives, it was decided to use in the intervention project the project work methodology. The principles of the research-action methodology guided this study and, through its permanent cycles of observation, planning, action and reflection, it was possible to make informed and intentional decisions and, therefore, make the teaching and learning processes more significant. Data were collected through logbooks, observation grill, document analysis, semi-structured interviews, brainstorming and questionnaires. The results showed that most children in Pre-School Education and 3rd grade were able to develop oral language and approach to writing/Portuguese; construct scientific concepts, although with different levels of formulation; and develop procedural knowledge (e.g. problem formulation, prediction, recording results and conclusions), although in 3rd grade they did it with a higher degree of autonomy. Both groups enjoyed the experimental activities. In 3rd grade they all improved their cooperative work skills. Thus, this research shows the potential of experimental activities in the construction significant learning and holistic development of children. |
