Processos de resolução da ambivalência em escrita combinada: estudo exploratório com estudantes universitários

Abstract

Objetivo: A ambivalência pode ser entendida como o conflito entre duas posições do self, uma favorável à mudança e a outra à permanência do status quo. Este conflito pode ser resolvido pela dominância da posição inovadora sobre a posição problemática, ou pela negociação entre posições. O presente estudo explorou a existência dos processos de resolução da ambivalência (RA) num contexto ecológico, as diferenças de RA nas diferentes instruções de escrita e a associação da RA com medidas de ambivalência, sofrimento psicológico e ruminação. Método: Os textos de 74 participantes do grupo experimental da intervenção de escrita online Write’n Let Go foram codificados com recurso ao Ambivalence Resolution Coding System. Resultados: Foi possível identificar a RA nas tarefas de escrita, com tarefas de escrita positiva a produzirem mais RA relativamente às tarefas de escrita expressiva. Foram encontradas correlações moderadas entre a RA e a ambivalência e sofrimento psicológico, com a negociação a explicar mais dessa associação. Discussão: A RA num contexto ecológico evidenciou um perfil semelhante ao reportado na psicoterapia. A associação da RA com a diminuição da ambivalência e sofrimento psicológico indica que a RA poderá ser um processo relevante na compreensão do funcionamento das intervenções de escrita.

Aim: Ambivalence can be understood as a conflict between two positions of the self where one favours change and the other supports maintaining the status quo. This conflict can be overcome by the dominance of the innovative position over the problematic position, or by the negotiation between both positions. This investigation aimed to explore the existence of ambivalence resolution processes (AR) in an ecological context, verify possible differences in AR between different writing instructions and study the association between AR and measure of ambivalence, psychological distress, and rumination. Method: The texts of 74 participants from the online writing intervention Write’n Let Go were coded using the Ambivalence Resolution Coding System. Results: We were able to identify AR in the writing tasks, with positive writing producing more AR when compared to expressive writing. Moderate correlations were found between AR and measures of ambivalence and psychological distress, with negotiation explaining more of that association. Discussion: AR in an ecological context showed a similar profile when compared to what was found in psychotherapy. The association between AR and the decrease of ambivalence and psychological distress shows that AR can be a relevant process to the understanding of how writing interventions work.
