“Ordered Probit” e “Multinomial Probit”.
The main objective of the study is to analyse the influence of everyday financial behaviour of the Portuguese population, particularly, (1) Savings, (2) Cash-Flow Management and (3) Credit Card Management. Concerning the first dimension, it is analysed the regularity of savings, the practice of more and better saving behaviours (savings index) and the possession of an emergency fund; concerning the second aspect, it is studied the planning and budgeting of expenses, the payment of bills on time or the recording and tracking of expenses and/or financial transactions (cash-flow management index) and concerning the credit card management, the possession of a credit card, the payment in full of the amount due and the incurrence of default situations are studied. Additional objectives are the verification of the influence of numeracy and sociodemographic characteristics of individuals, as well as factors such as overconfidence, risk aversion, patience or self-control. Data is collected through an online questionnaire that was created and distributed to people with Portuguese nationality and aged 18 years old or over, and 207 valid answers were collected. OLS, Probit, Ordered Probit and a Multinomial Probit regressions were used for data analysis. In regard to financial literacy, there is a positive relationship between age, gender (male), education and field of study (Business Science) and numeracy with the level of financial literacy and its positive influence on financial behaviours in general. Some of the main results regarding the 3 dimensions show that, in the case of Savings, males are more likely to have an emergency fund with a longer time horizon and a positive relationship between numeracy and regular saving. Regarding the practice of activities related to Cash-Flow Management, people with better levels of patience show better results and regarding Credit Card Management, those with higher income levels tend to have one or more credit cards, a lower tendency to incur in default situations by married people and individuals with higher levels of self-control and those with higher levels of risk aversion tend to pay the credit card debt in full. |
