O conceito de agência aplicado à tradução especializada: estágio curricular na Wordattachment

Abstract

O presente relatório visa descrever e analisar o estágio curricular desenvolvido na Wordattachment no âmbito do Mestrado em Tradução e Comunicação Multilingue da Universidade do Minho. O fio condutor do relatório será a teoria da agência. Esta tem as suas origens na sociologia e debruça-se sobre a organização de relações comerciais, nomeadamente, questões como a hierarquia e as relações de poder dentro de redes de produção, assim como os interesses pessoais de cada interveniente. Aplicada à indústria da tradução, a teoria da agência permite analisar de que forma a agência de um tradutor (entendida, neste relatório, como a sua capacidade para produzir traduções de qualidade) se poderá encontrar condicionada por estes fatores. Primeiramente, procurar-se-á explicar a teoria da agência e, através desta, apresentar outros tópicos relevantes para o estágio curricular. Dentro destes, destacam-se o crescimento da indústria da tradução, concomitante com a globalização; a regulação da prática profissional de tradução; e o processo de avaliação de qualidade. Os capítulos seguintes assentarão sobre este enquadramento teórico. A descrição do estágio, a apresentação da empresa de acolhimento e do seu funcionamento e a análise do trabalho desenvolvido (principalmente de tradução, revisão e avaliação de qualidade) terão como objetivo analisar de que forma a aluna dispôs de agência ao longo do estágio. Esta reflexão contribuirá, finalmente, para apreciar de que forma o estágio curricular complementou os conhecimentos e as competências adquiridas durante o Mestrado.

The present report aims to describe and analyze the curricular internship carried out at Wordattachment as part of the master’s degree in Translation and Multilingual Communication of the University of Minho. The common thread chosen for this report is agency theory. Having its roots in sociology, the theory addresses the organization of commercial relationships, particularly, matters such as hierarchy and power relations in production networks, as well as each actor’s personal interests. By looking at the translation industry through the lens of agency theory, it is possible to explore how a translator’s agency – understood in the present report as the ability to produce good quality translations – may be conditioned by these factors. Firstly, a general explanation of agency theory will be presented, which will then serve as a backdrop to the exposition of other topics considered especially relevant to the internship. These include the growth of the translation industry, concomitant with globalization; the regulation of professional translation; and the quality assurance process. The subsequent chapters will be founded on this theoretical framework. By describing the internship, presenting the host company and its workflow, and analyzing the work that was carried out – mainly translation, editing and quality assurance – the report will seek to analyze how the student had agency throughout the internship. These considerations will ultimately allow for an appreciation of how this curricular internship complemented the knowledge and skills developed in the course of the master’s degree.
