O olhar médico sobre as doenças, as epidemias e os problemas sanitários no Portugal de oitocentos (1855-1920)

Abstract

Portugal, em meados do século XIX e início do XX, assim como outros Estados europeus, enfrentou epidemias que desafiaram os governos, as estruturas sanitárias e os profissionais de saúde, estando em destaque, nesta investigação, os médicos. Neste trabalho, analisamos o conhecimento médico português de 1855 a 1920, período em que o país enfrentou epidemias da cólera, varíola, peste bubónica, tifo, a febre tifoide e ainda a pneumónica. O objetivo deste estudo consiste em conhecer e compreender o saber destes profissionais sobre estas doenças e em relação às descobertas científicas que alteraram os paradigmas sanitários. Para realizar esta investigação, interpretamos os discursos médicos, através das teses inaugurais apresentadas na Escola Médico-Cirúrgica do Porto e, após 1911, Faculdade de Medicina do Porto, buscando compreender o nível do saber científico dos clínicos no momento em que a população se encontrava sob ameaça e estes profissionais ampliavam o seu protagonismo perante a sociedade.

During the middle of the 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th Century, Portugal and other European states faced epidemics that defied governments, sanitary structures and healthcare professionals, the ones highlighted in this investigation are the doctors. In this research it was analyzed the Portuguese medical knowledge from 1855 to 1920, when the country faced the epidemics of cholera, smallpox, bubonic plague, typhus, typhus fever and the 1918 influenza pandemic. The purpose of it is to comprehend the knowledge of these professionals about the aforementioned diseases, regarding the scientific discoveries that altered the sanitary paradigms. To accomplish this research, it was interpreted the medical discourses of the inaugural thesis presented in the Medical School for Surgery in Porto and after 1911 The Medical School of Porto, trying to understand the knowledge of the medical practitioners during a time when the population was under threat and these professionals were broadening their leading role towards society.
