When starting the research on the subject in question, it was found that the stereotype of a profession is largely the result of social opinions, the realities that are experienced and the way this widespread perception can influence other people, especially students as they are at a crucial stage for their future. Being of great importance the perception of students for the future of accounting and its profession, the study aims to identify, understand and interpret the perception that students from socio-economic sciences have about accountants and the accounting profession, and understand if there are different perceptions between accounting students and the students from other courses. To achieve this goal, we intend to answer the following questions: what are the perceptions that students in the socioeconomic area have about the accountants and your profession? and what are the differences in perceptions, if any, between accounting students and students from other socio-economic fields? In order to theoretically frame this study, we proceeded through a literature review on the perceptions and stereotypes created regarding accounting and its professionals talk about the origin of the stereotype, what influenced the formation of perceptions and the importance of accounting with the passage of time. Then, a more specific approach was taken in relation to the perceptions of accountants from the perspective of society, culture, students and finally the respective professionals. To collect the data, a questionnaire was prepared and sent to students of the Management, Economics, Accounting, Public Administration, International Business, Political Science and Marketing degrees of the University of Minho. Among the conclusions obtained, the present study found that the students still consider that the accountant is perceived by characteristics updated to the new times, although we can find the presence of some more traditional characteristics in the image formed by the students. In addition, the professional is seen as someone who has knowledge of various areas to be able to elaborate his work, being seen as an organized, committed and independent professional. Regarding the differences in perceptions between the different groups of students, we can conclude that they are visible in only a few factors, and there is no major discrepancy between the perceptions formed. |
