drenagem regional.
drenagem exorreica atlântica, antecessora da rede hidrográfica atual, da qual o Douro seria parte
integrante.
The region in the Northwest of Portugal that comprises areas of Gondomar, Porto, Valongo and Vila Nova de Gaia, is dominated by a set of elevations, located some 20km from the coast. They are the remnants of Ordovician quarzitic reliefs, forming two almost parallel alignments that have a very relevant consequence on the structure of the hydrographic network, dominated by rivers Douro, Ferreira, Sousa and Mau, whose transverse drainage cross mountains through, allowing the formation of deep and narrow gorges. Several erosional surfaces and sedimentary terraces were identified. The highest surface, without sediments, is situated in Serra de Fânzeres, between 173 and 194m of altitude. Below it, we individualized the surfaces and sedimentary units of Pedrouços (146-160m), Ermentão (100-120m), Boavista (75-90m), Avª. M. Gomes da Costa (45-60m), Foz do Douro (30 to 40m), Carreiros (10-20m) and Praia dos Ingleses, below 10m of altitude. During Pleistocene, climatic changes, the eustatic sea-level changes, isostatic readjustments and the tectonic compressive regime were control factors of the regional drainage. Different levels of fluvial terraces, whose remnants may be reduced to little strath terraces and very small sedimentary terraces, are associated with that. Its geomorphological and sedimentological analysis permits considering the existence of continental deposition conditions related to an alluvial fan (debris-flow deposits), and to a torrential and fluvial regime, with provision coming from the quarzitic ridges at East. A chronology of the main periods of the geomorphological evolution since High Miocenic was proposed considering the presence of previous exoreic drainage, Douro included. The primitive network may have been constituted by alluvial channels that would take sediments westwards, evolving to a successively better organized and hierarchized drainage that penetrates progressively to the interior with the intensification of the definition of the reliefs, especially the quarzitic elevations. Finally, Geodiversity Sites were selected, characterized and elements of support to the visit were the object of individual files having in mind the possibility of contributing to field work, especially by secondary school students. |
