portuguesas no período 2014-2018.
As variáveis dimensão e
The profitability of companies is affected by tax policies. Tax benefits for investment, in particular, aim to promote the competitiveness of companies, contribute to the strengthening of their capital structures and create jobs. Indeed, it is expected that the use of incentives will have an impact on the economic performance of companies and may constitute an important mechanism for achieving corporate results. Thus, this study's main objective is to assess the existence of a relationship between tax incentives and the profitability of Portuguese companies in the period 2014-2018. In addition, this report also seeks to comply with Article 9 of the Regulation for Professional Registration, Internship and Examination of the Order of Accountants and the internship regulation inserted in the curriculum plan for the Master of Accounting. Regarding the subject of the study, in a first phase we identified the companies that benefited from tax incentives in the period under analysis, using the data provided by the Portuguese tax authority website, which were complemented with economic and financial information collected from Orbis Europe database. The model uses the Return On Assets - ROA as the dependent variable, representative of profitability, obtained by the quotient between the Net Profit for the Period and the Total Assets. As explanatory variable, it uses the incentives obtained through the neperian logarithm of the total incentives obtained under the Investment Tax Code, and as independent variables, the size of the companies, the leverage and the asset rotation. The results obtained show that there is a positive and statistically significant relationship between receiving tax incentives and the profitability of Portuguese companies. The variables dimension and asset rotation also have a positive relationship with profitability, in contrast to the leverage that showed a negative association. This study proves to be relevant for a group of agents, be they political decision makers, managers/shareholders and investors as it contributes to the knowledge of the effectiveness of the benefits in the results and growth of companies. Regarding the internship carried out at Vieira Pocargil, S.A., in the period from 3 December 2018 to 31 May 2019, the proposed objectives were fulfilled, with experience and training acquired to enter the activity of certified accountant. |
