e Materiais Inteligentes (CeNTI) e o MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This work sought to create value in the textile business industry by developing a textile based soft orthotic device with applications on medical treatments. The developments of this work includ the creation of a new textile based compression sleeve concept, which incorporated technical solutions of artificial muscles in order to replace the passive elements and new strain sensors to sense the pressure made by the artificial muscles. The studied artificial muscles consisted of the Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs), namely nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloys and the strain sensors were based on optical fibers. In the first step, a review about active materials that integrate artificial muscles technologies is presented. Since the intention is to integrate this type of material into a textile structure, some examples of textile applications using SMAs were also explored, particularly in the emerging field of smart and functional textiles. Subsequently, experimental tests with optical fibers and Flexinol® wires (commercial type of NiTi SMAs) were performed. Through these tests, it was possible to draw conclusions about the influence of the sensor and the alloy pattern, in the design and development of actuators systems with greater controlled pressure capacity. After the tests the developed sensors and actuators were embedded into an elastic textile subtract using embroidering processes. The electrical activation unit and the actuation control system were implemented through a specific hardware and firmware in a PCB with the circuit responsible for activating the actuator sections. Thus, a light and adaptable rehabilitation device to provide safety and healthcare was conceived. This active soft orthotic device was idealized based on the techniques for treatment of upper limb lymphatic edema. The active compression sleeve prototype can be seen as a complementary treatment alternative to traditional rehabilitation techniques, offering in a single system a drain massage effect. This work was developed in cooperation with Centre for Nanotechnology and Smart Materials (CeNTI) and MIT- Massachusetts Institute of Technology. |
