This research is based on examples of empirical studies taken into account under a phenomenon-graphical perspective. Its aim is to acknowledge and analyse the conceptions of 6th grade students about their lack of success in mathematics according to the following dimensions: what it is, how it can be assessed, causes, consequences and what to do to avoid it/fight it back. All the data were obtained through a series of semi-structured interviews and qualitative procedures were used in its study and analysis. The sample for this study is composed of 34 students, 16 being male and 18 female. The main outcomes relate to the mapping of different conceptions that students may have regarding each of the dimensions of the phenomenon under analysis. By answering the question: ”What do you consider to be the lack of success in mathematics?” students have concentrated their verbal output in five different categories, describing the dimension mostly as individual work, interest, behaviour, attention and school performance. Likewise, they have created five categories like participation, testing, behaviour, homework and attention to describe the dimension “How it can be assessed”. In the description of the third dimension we find as main causes categories like individual work, attention, ability, behaviour and interest. In what concerns its consequences (fourth dimension), the students concentrate their verbal output in three main categories, evaluating the lack of success in terms of day-to-day action, future jobs and educational future. As to the fifth dimension, and as seen on the field of literature, the categories: individual work, on the part of students; teaching strategies, on the part of teachers; social support, on the part of parents and educational policies as well of the Education Department, emerge as important means to avoid and fight back the phenomenon. The analysis of all the data leads us to consider that these students, while manifesting a declarative and conditional knowledge of the situation of failure in mathematics, also reveal a depressed procedural knowledge. They concentrate on the product, although they find themselves unable to define the process by which they get there. |
