A seleção
universidade do sul do Brasil, 225 (69.7%) eram mulheres, as idades variaram de 18 a 42 anos (M =
23,86, DP = 4,77).
The present study aims to contribute to the body of knowledge about family influence in the career choice implementation process. The study was organized in two theoretical studies and two empirical studies. In the first theoretical study, we started by reviewing and critically analyzing the theoretical and empirical contributions to try to demonstrate how the family can influence the career choice implementation process and propose a conceptual schema to understand this process. It stars by locating implementation in the career decision-making process and reviewing some of the main theoretical contributions on the subject. Next, contextual factors involved in the career decision-making process are analyzed. The implementation represents the execution of a choice and the entry into a new career context. Based on such idea, are discussed the influence of the family, and several ways family can act. It is concluded that the family can influence the implementation of career decisions through proximal and distal factors. Finally, the evaluation of the quality of implementation is discussed, highlighting a proposal that considers it in terms of success and satisfaction. The next theoretical study was reviewed similar studies on the topic. The selection of studies used strategies derived from systematic reviews and the analysis was based on narrative reviews, aiming to provide a comprehensive knowledge about the phenomenon with reliability in the included studies. The results confirm the division proposed by previous works between procedural and structural factors of familial influence. The former is mostly presented in relation to the decision process, their quality and stability, and the latter is mostly presented in relation to the influence on the content of decisions. The actuation of some factors was more prominent, such as support, attachment, parental education and socioeconomic status. Inspired by the conceptual model previously described that organizes the family influence in instances and in the main elements of family influence identified in the review study, the first empirical study carried out an analysis of the relations that are established between familiar factors. The objective was fulfilled through a hypothetical model consisting of two articulated parts, distal and proximal family influence. The distal element translates the context, more linked to the culture where the family is immersed and its sociodemographic components. The proximal element is represented by family values and beliefs, expectations, informational and financial support. The study involved 248 students from a university located in the south of Brazil, 184 (65.8%) were women, ages ranging from 18 to 42 years (M = 23.47, SD = 4.42). The data analysis method used were Structural Equation Models. The results underpinned the subjacent hypothesis that family influence is organized from more distal aspects toward aspects very close to the career decision making process. Among the included distal factors, the influence of education is highlighted. The four proximal factors, although they each represent an independent dimension, seem to have some relation to each other. Only the factors related to informational and financial support were associated with the distal component. The presented model integrates a much broader process regarding the influence of the family in the implementation of the career decisions. For this reason, the next empirical study evaluated the implementation process through the evaluation of performance and satisfaction in the domain where career decisions are implemented. The aim was fulfilled through testing two hypothetical models based on the Social Cognitive Career Theory. The first integrates familial factors to an adaptation of the wellbeing model of this theory, the second is interested in exploring the effect of the family on the experience of satisfaction and performance. The study involved 323 students from a university in the south of Brazil, 225 (69.7%) were women, ages ranged from 18 to 42 years (M = 23.86, SD = 4.77). The main data analysis method was Structural Equation Models. The results supported the general hypothesis that family influence has an effect on the process of implementing career decisions. Among the family factors, it was identified that the family support contributes in the implementation process, especially in the experience of satisfaction in the domain. Some familiar factors such as expectations can make a negative contribution to the process. The more distal elements, such as values and beliefs, may have an ambiguous actuation but their negatives effects can be attenuated by familiar factors closer to the process, such as support. The study as a whole can conclude that family influence on career choices implementations processes can be organized in instances, starting from proximal influences, close to the implementation and extends to more distal contexts. Based on this organization and the ideas of the Social Cognitive Career Theory, it was possible to propose three conceptual models. This thesis has implications for the practice of counseling with college students, or even university candidates, and their parents. It also has implications from the institutional point of view, in subjects such as dropout and permanence. There are also limitations, such as geographic, sociocultural and gender issues, therefore, it is indicated apply the model in different environments in order to extend and refine its results. |
