No
Introduction: Scientific evidence shows that care for family dependents (FD) is mostly provided by women -
wives and daughters. However, there is an increasing number of men playing the role.
Objectives: To compare the profile of the family caregivers (CF) regarding gender, accompanied by ICCT.
Method: Exploratory study of quantitative profile. Sample includes 128 FC (Male=19; Female=109)
accompanied by 4 ICCT from the Minho region of Portugal. Applied the form ""Profile of Dependents
Integrated in the NNICC Providers"", between March 2014/February 2015.
Results:The FC-males comparatively to the FC-females, mostly: they are couples of the FD; are older;
cohabit with FD; exercise the role of caregivers for the first time; exercising the role of caregivers prior to
ECCI follow-up, take care of FD for less time; they take care of FD with less time of dependence; have less
potential to take care of FD. Dependent care for FC-males has less commitment in bodily processes; Are
less dependent and have a greater potential for autonomic reconstruction, however, they have more
episodes of exacerbation with the need to resort to hospital emergency and have more falls.
Conclusions:For sociodemographic reasons, there is an increasing number of FC-males. However, the
results of this study seem to highlight the need for a greater follow-up to this group by the health
professionals. Introduction: Scientific evidence shows that care for family dependents (FD) is mostly provided by women - wives and daughters.
