A lista de Aristides de Sousa Mendes: as personalidades do mundo da cultura

Abstract

O objectivo deste projecto é divulgar alguns dos nomes ligados à cultura que, fugindo à Segunda Guerra Mundial, procuraram refúgio em Portugal em 1940, tendo como elemento comum o facto de terem recebido vistos passados por Aristides de Sousa Mendes. Pretende também dar a conhecer algumas obras realizadas por escritores como Salomon Dembitzer, Tereska Torrès, Maria Bauer, que se focam nesse mesmo período, relatando directa ou indirectamente a experiência vivida nesses tempos muito difíceis. Aristides de Sousa Mendes estava colocado em Bordéus, como Cônsul Português, no início da Segunda Guerra Mundial quando um documento emitido por Salazar, a Circular 14, veio limitar a acção dos diplomatas, pois determinava que os cônsules de carreira não poderiam conceder vistos consulares sem prévia consulta e aprovação do Ministério. Em clara desobediência a esta directiva, Aristides de Sousa Mendes passou vistos a todos os que deles precisavam, com o intuito de salvar o máximo de vidas que lhe fosse possível. Por esse gesto, Aristides foi condenado a um ano de inactividade, com metade do vencimento que auferia, tendo sido aposentado, sem direito a recurso, o que o levou a uma vida de dificuldades, dada a sua numerosa família. Para a História ficou uma listagem de milhares de nomes, onde se poderão encontrar figuras ligadas ao mundo da cultura, como Gala e Salvador Dalí, Friedrich Torberg, Robert Montgomery, Simone Gallimard, Hélène de Beauvoir, Margaret e Hans Rey, Tereska Torrès, entre outros.

The purpose of this dissertation is to pursuit the goal to study some of the names of people related to arts that, while trying to escape from World War II, received a visa from the Portuguese consul, Aristides de Sousa Mendes, that allowed them to travel to Portugal. Also, the author will mention some of the works that directly or indirectly tell the story of the experience lived during those difficult times. Aristides de Sousa Mendes was placed at Bordeaux as Portuguese Consul, at the beginning of World War II when a document issued by Salazar, Circular 14, restricted the action of all diplomatic staff, since it determined that consuls could only issue visas with previous authorization from the Ministry. Disobeying to these orders, Aristides de Sousa Mendes issued visas to those who were in need of them, thus trying to save as many lives as possible. For this gesture, Aristides was convicted to a year of inactivity, earning half his salary and was afterwards forced to retire, without any opportunity to appeal. This compulsory retirement led to a difficult life considering his large family. To the History remained a list with thousands of names, where we may find people related to Arts as Gala e Salvador Dalí, Friedrich Torberg, Robert Montgomery, Simone Gallimard, Hélène de Beauvoir, Margaret e Hans Rey, Tereska Torrès, among others.
