YouTube is a platform that over the years has invested a number of features to become more dynamic, interactive, and similar to social media formats where users can participate and interact more. This evolution allowed the expansion of its business model based on the co-optation of the content generated by the user, which is marketed with the advertiser brands. Content, therefore, is the currency of exchange in this system that values the high level of professionalism and rewards content creators who are most able to attract followers, engagement, and hence publicity. These youtubers who achieve great success in the platform are also known as microcelebrities and have as main characteristic what differentiates them from television celebrities: the sense of proximity and intimacy that awakens in the fans. Self-branding is the strategy that microcelebrities use to perform their daily life, while subtly promoting brands and products. This context especially attracts young people, both by YouTube being the social network that is among the most popular for this audience, and by the fact that they are at a stage where peers influence the formation of their subjectivities. In this way, this study analyzes the channel SofiaBBeuaty, of the young portuguese youtuber Sofia Barbosa, through the content of videos, speech and practices of youtuber and the interaction of its community of followers, in an attempt to understand how Sofia and her audience build on the culture of consumption in the context of microelebrity. |
