A mediatização de regiões na secção Local de um jornal nacional: o caso do jornal Público

Abstract

Todos os diários generalistas portugueses dedicam uma fatia da cobertura mediática a assuntos de interesse local. Esta cobertura é enquadrada em secções com diferentes designações. No jornal PÚBLICO, esta secção é apropriadamente apelidada de “Local”, à qual são normalmente dedicadas duas páginas diárias, e é, por hábito, o único aspeto que diferencia o jornal que chega às bancas de todo o país. Falamos do Local Porto e Local Lisboa (vendido a Sul de Coimbra). Esta divisão possibilita uma maior segmentação, permitindo, mesmo no caso de um jornal generalista de distribuição nacional, aproximar o jornal ao leitor de determinada comunidade geográfica. Mas que tipo de mediatização é feita pelo jornal acerca de comunidades distanciadas dos grandes centros de decisão? Este trabalho, que visa responder a essa questão, parte da minha experiência como estagiário no jornal durante três meses. Para chegar a uma resposta foram analisadas as notícias da editoria durante o período de estágio e categorizadas segundo a região mediatizada, a temática da notícia, a hierarquia nas páginas destinadas à secção, a assinatura e a dimensão do texto. Os resultados mostram o Porto, distrito onde o jornal tem presença, como o principal distrito da mediatização, com cerca de metade das 203 notícias analisadas. Temas como Sociedade, Cultura e Ambiente dominam as páginas da secção. Esta investigação também destaca a importância dos jornalistas correspondentes, que garantem praticamente metade do trabalho da secção e a sub-representação de algumas regiões nas páginas da secção.

All portuguese generalist newspapers devote a slice of their media coverage to issues of local interest. This coverage is framed in sections with different designations. In the Público newspaper, this section is called "Local", to which two daily pages are usually dedicated, and is, by habit, the only aspect that differentiates the newspaper that reaches newsstands all over the country. We're talking about Local Porto and Local Lisboa. This division allows for greater segmentation, allowing, even in the case of a generalist newspaper of national distribution, bringing the newspaper closer to the reader of a given geographical community. But what kind of media coverage is done by the newspaper about communities far away from the big decision -making centers? This work, which aims to answer that question, is the result of my experience as a intern for three months. In order to reach an answer, we analyzed the news from the section during the internship period and categorized it as follows: the region of the media coverage, the theme of the news, the hierarchy in the pages of the section, the signature and the size of the text. The results show Porto, the district where the newspaper has a newsroom, as the main district of media coverage, with about half of the 203 news items analysed. Themes such as Society, Culture and Environment dominate the pages of the section. This research also highlights the importance of correspondent journalists, who account for almost half of the section's work and the under-representation of some regions on the section's pages.
